Tanzania

After a quick stopover in Addis Ababa, we’ve reached the Seychelles for a four-night stay on Felicite Island. We’re missing our time in continental Africa already.

On the flight to Tanzania, I finished reading Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene, which I’d highly recommend. The message of that book is that genes are the fundamental and persistent unit of life, brought together temporarily in individual organisms acting as throwaway survival machines—robot vehicles blindly programmed to preserve the selfish molecules known as genes—“immortal coils shuffling off an endless succession of mortal ones as they forge towards their separate eternities.”

It might feel like this lens casts a detached, mechanical shadow over the diversity of life we saw across the incomprehensibly vast plains of the Serengeti. But I thought that it made what we saw even more amazing and wonderful; that even if individual survival machines are ephemeral, life in some form is inevitable, that life finds a way.
