We’re Alice and Marshall, and we’re about to set off on a nine-month trip around the world.

Alice grew up in Sheboygan, a city vaguely in the vicinity of Milwaukee, Wisconsin (go cheese curds and German food!), and Marshall grew up Markham, a suburb of Toronto (with awesome public transit, so that he never really learned how to drive).

We met in college, lived in and around NYC after graduation, spent a couple of months in 2020-2021 remote-working from Encinitas, CA and Las Vegas, NV while learning to surf and exploring the beautiful American Southwest, and got married in 2023.

We both started our careers in finance, where there’s a concept of a “garden leave” for those looking to switch jobs: a months-long period where you aren’t allowed to work before starting at a new company. Marshall has happily worked at the same company for eight years now and has no plans for a garden leave; instead, he asked for a nine-month sabbatical starting in October 2024 so that we could see the world. Alice was a little overzealous in her excitement about this whole idea, and quit her job a year earlier in 2023 (sorry, not sorry), spending the time in-between traveling on her own and with her family, and doing a lot of the planning and setup for our adventure.
