Kicking off the planning (part 2)

Traveling 9 months (still) seems really daunting

Now that we had our overall dates set, we needed to actually order the travel. This step was a lot of fun because once ordered, we could start imagining ourselves in Africa in October and Japan in November etc. Things became somewhat real.

This post is going to be much shorter because fortunately, with the way we set up our massive Google Sheet, we could literally filter the Google Sheet based on the month of travel (which ones were marked with 1’s and were blue) and determine which continent/region we were going to hit that month. It was pretty straightforward with a couple of small quirks:

  • Most countries were “ideal” across multiple months which gives you some more flexibility

  • Group largely by continent - no need to pay extra for cross ocean waters if you don’t need to

  • Actually look up “rough” flights on Google Flights to see if you can take advantage of any layovers/stops/airline hubs.

After a couple of hours (again on a Saturday night 🤘🏼), we have the general outline of locations!

Month Continent/Region General idea
October Africa Safari
November Asia Japan
December South America Patagonia, Antarctica, Argentina
January South America Bolivia, Galapagos, Ecuador
February Southeast Asia Raja Ampat, Thailand, Vietnam
March East Asia China, Taiwan, Korea, Bhutan
April Middle East/Europe Dubai, Turkey, Greece
May/June More Europe Dolomites, Norway, Iceland

If you’re reading this, we’re still in planning or early travel mode and there’s a place you recommend we go that’s not listed here, let us know! We’re always open to awesome places that people have enjoyed themselves.

We realized once this schedule was (roughly) finalized, we were only 6 months away from our first Big Rock: safari in Africa and so we had to start doing actual planning for our top trip priorities ASAP!
